Award winning comedian Jesse Griffin returned to New Zealand in 2010 after 15 years
working in the UK and Australia and has quickly cemented himself as one of New
Zealand’s best comedic talents.
Jesse was a member of The 4 Noels, an Australian based comic trio that from 1997 to 2007
toured NZ, Australia and the UK. Their high energy brand of physical comedy earned
them sell-out seasons, critical acclaim and a number of awards and accolades including
the Edinburgh Spirit of the Fringe Award, best comedy awards at the Melbourne and
Wellington Fringe Festivals, and a Moosehead Award and two Barry Award nominations
from the Melbourne Comedy Festival.
In 2004 Jesse created legendary American country music character Wilson Dixon and
continues to perform him to this day in festivals, on TV and as a headline act on the live
circuit in NZ and overseas.
Jesse turned his hand to solo stand up in 2010 and his first ever gig in London just
happened to be alongside Milton Jones, Rich Hall, Ed Byrne, and Glenn Wool.
His understated delivery and clever observational humour has seen him become a regular
performer on the NZ stand up circuit. In 2013 he toured the country as part of The New
Zealand International Comedy Festival’s roadshow “The Comedy Convoy” and in 2014
appeared on AotearoHA on TV3.
If you think you recognize his face from somewhere else it may be because he plays the
role of the bureaucratic council officer Sean on 800 Words on TV1.
In 2016 Jesse created a new character, a contemporary artist, and developed a solo
comedy show for the NZ Comedy Festival entitled Sex With Horses, later called Centaur
for it's return season at the Basement Theatre. With the theatre converted into an art
gallery and filled with art made by Jesse, the audience is welcomed into the space as if
attending an exhibition opening for a fully immersive art experience.
A sought-after comedy director, writer and actor, Jesse was the head writer and creative
executive producer of Comedy for Cure Kids from 2012 to 2015 creating "Feel Inside" with
the Flight of the Conchords and "Team Ball Player Thing" with Taika Waititi among many
other pieces of content.
Jesse is currently developing several comedy TV and Feature Film projects.
