Welcome to the 2024 NZ International Comedy Festival - 02 to 26 May.

Te Radar’s Retrospectacle

5 different shows over 5 nights! Celebrating 30 years in comedy, Te Radar performs the top 5 of his award-winning docu-comedies as part of the New Zealand International Comedy Festival at The Classic, New Zealand’s home of live comedy.

In fast-paced 1-hour versions of his top live shows, witness his early days as a failed war correspondent in Timor ODDyssey, discover bizarre stories from local history in Eating the Dog, trek through true tales of the frozen south in Antarcticana, get a dose of our substance-enhanced past in Intoxicana, then sample the deliciously mad world of New Zealand’s vintage cookbooks in Cookbookery!

Tuesday 21st May: Timor ODDyssey (2005)

In February 2000 Te Radar resolved to fulfil his lifelong dream of becoming a war correspondent. After nearly drowning in the middle of the Australian desert he eventually convinced the UN to fly him to East Timor to try to find New Zealand’s Peacekeeping forces. ‘A voyage of extreme bravery and stupidity.’ NBR

2005 Best Local Show NZ International Comedy Festival

Wednesday 22nd May: Eating the Dog (2009)

Te Radar celebrates the bumblers and the near-do-wells who personify the ‘she’ll be right’ spirit that epitomises New Zealand’s history. It’s the history that history tried to forget.

‘Plain astonishing…. If you don’t choke with laughter you might learn something’. Waikato Times

2009  Best Show New Zealand Comedy Guild

2009 Fred Award for Comedy Achievement  NZ International Comedy Festival

2009 Best Local Show (Auckland) NZ International Comedy Festival

Thursday 23rd May: Antarcticana (2012)

Hilarious true tales from the frozen South! Antarcticana is an illustrated comedic lecture on all things Antarctic. Te Radar explores the land that Capt. Robert Scott called ‘This Awful Place’. The show may also shatter any illusions you had about the innocence of penguins, proving that what we think we know about Antarctica is just the tip of the iceberg.

Friday 24th May: Intoxicana (2022)

A trip into New Zealand’s befuddling history of drugs and alcohol.  Did 1940s New Zealand really have the highest per capita rate of heroin usage in the world? Was it illegal to shout someone a drink? These untold stories of intoxicating substances confirm that our history is completely out of it!

2022 Excellence award Dunedin Fringe Festival

Saturday 25th May: Cookbookery! (2024)

Te Radar’s brand new show debuted at 2023’s Wellington on a Plate, where it was performed to accompany a six course degustation under the title Crumbed Tongues and Tall Tales.  Te Radar has sampled a century and a half of New Zealand cookbooks to find the tastiest and most hilarious morsels. No food will be served in this set menu of delectable comedy delights, but you’ll probably be glad of that.
